One of our maple trees looked like it could break apart if we should happen to have some of the snow and freezing rain, followed by heavy winds as we've had in some past years
when a lot of trees ended up with some of their large limbs breaking apart, crushing cars and houses. Tree companies used to cable trees as a common practice but all the ones I called this year said they no longer do it for insurance reasons. I'm not sure why, since our large silver maple in the front yard was cabled many years ago and is still holding together well. Anyhow, I figured I'd do it myself next year, but would have to learn a little more about it and develop a proper strategy. To get it through this year I decided to secure it using a 10,000lb. tow strap. The strap is more than strong enough to hold it and also allows it to flex in the wind which I've heard many of the modern cabling methods also do. Below are some of the pics I took of the process - doing it without any help.
