When planting broccoli for Fall/Winter harvest, I dig holes a bit larger than the root ball, fill it with water, allow the water to
saturate the ground surrounding the hole and then add more water containing nematodes (in the "Ocean Spray" container in the pic) to
kill the grubs in the surrounding area. Nematodes are a natural organic way to kill grubs.
Grubs can be found, often in heavy infestations in the ground in late summer where they feed on roots to fatten up, kinda like a bear does before going into hibernations, until the weather begins to get very cold and they burrow deeper into the ground to spend the winter months. So, putting in new plants, is nearly like giving those young plants a death sentence and the grubs a tasty meal to dine on. There are millions of varieties of nematodes in the ground naturally, but due to recent changes in the environment and other factors some that were there are no longer as plentiful. Nematodes kill grubs by acting as carriers of various bacteria into the grubs which then kill them. However, the nematodes require a moist environment in which to travel which is the reason I do the pre-soaking of the holes in which I place the plants as described above.
