In the outdoor garden, I grow most things in raised beds. But I've discovered that lettuce grows very well, right through the
summer months, when misted frequently throughout the day. And because of the somewhat shallow root system, can grow fine in pots
or troughs.
Below are pics of troughs I contructed for the purpose. Most are pics from when I made these the first time with poplar used
for the painted pieces because I had such an excess of it laying around (the amount of cedar required would be quite expensive) and
knew that the high quality exterior latex paint would help it hold up for at least a few years. A few years is actually when it began
to rot even having been painted. So, I later remade them, reusing the cedar sides (coated with Minwax Spar Urethane) and the bottoms
and end pieces with cedar sprayed with the same exterior latex. This time they should last for many years, even outdoors in the sun
and misted every hour or so with misters placed above them.
The eighth pic shows how reusing the old cedar sides for the new reconstruct adds a nice look to the finish project due to the blackening
of certain areas such as around the knots, ends, and the tiny drain holes at the bottom.
